An art exhibition featuring Dunhuang murals kicked off at the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music on Sunday to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) as well as to bring the distinctive artworks closer to university students.

Apart from 66 digital replications of murals from the Mogao Grottoes from Dunhuang, Northwest China's Gansu Province, the exhibition will also display three 1:1 replicas of the grottoes and around 20 musical instruments and various clothing inspired by the murals.

The show makes use of digital media tools, immersive VR technologies and an intelligent voice navigation system to allow visitors to experience the cultural site more directly.

"The murals in Dunhuang have distinctive visual qualities that are suitable for this type of exhibition. Arts exhibition like this, with the help of technological tools, can guide audiences to walk into ancient culture again," Wu, an art curator in Chengdu, told the Global Times on Tuesday.

"As a digital art student who focuses on traditional Chinese culture, I feel exhibitions of such kind will be a source of inspiration for me, especially when it comes to universities… many of my classmates and digital artists I know are more aware of the conservation of such cultural gems through creative thinking," Jing, an artist in Chongqing who uses digital motion graphics to display the history behind damaged cultural relics, told the Global Times on Tuesday.

The exhibition is scheduled to end in September.
