Team China continued their grip on top of the medal standings at the Tokyo Olympics after claiming five gold medals on Monday. With six days left, the 29 golds have already surpassed their performance in the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016, where they finished third with 26 golds.

Liu Yang leads 1-2 Chinese finish in men's rings 

China's Liu Yang and You Hao claimed the gold and silver medals in the men's rings respectively at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on Monday.

Liu scored 15.500 points to finish on top, ahead of You in 15.300 points. Greece's defending champion Eleftherios Petrounias took bronze in 15.200 points.

Liu, 26, placed second to qualify for the final. With an unparalleled execution score of 9.000 points for his movements, Liu secured the first gymnastics gold for China at the Tokyo Games.

"My goal was to become an Olympic champion since I was a child. I have trained for 20 years, and I was very eager to become a champion. There were times when I wanted to give up, and times when I didn't want to practice, and then there were injuries or other factors. But in the end I still stick to it, and then had this satisfactory result," Liu said.

The 29-year-old You placed eighth to qualify for the final and finished by a gap of 0.200 points to Liu.

"I'm very satisfied, although it's silver, but I'm very satisfied," You said. "Pressure is from ourselves, because we all want to win glory for our country, and for the first few games there were gold, so we still have a lot of pressure. Basically, I put pressure on myself."

The 30-year-old Petrounias took the third by a gap of 0.100 points to You.

Weightlifter Wang crowned in women's 87kg



China's Wang Zhouyu pocketed a weightlifting gold medal in women's 87kg at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Monday.

Tamara Yajaira Salazar Arce from Ecuador came from behind to claim a silver with 263kg, while Crismery ­Dominga Santana Peguero from the Dominican Republic finished at 256kg for the bronze medal. She became the first female athlete representing the Dominican ­Republic to win an Olympic medal in an individual event.

But Wang was not satisfied with her performance en route to winning the title.

"It was far below my normal strength, but I will continue to work hard," she said.

After failing on her 115kg first snatch attempt, Wang made ­timely ­adjustment to lift this weight before improving it to 120kg. 

"I was a bit nervous in my first snatch attempt, and relaxed at a later stage," Wang explained.

China's Li Wenwen showed her supremacy in the women's weightlifting +87kg division, setting three new Olympic records en route to a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Monday.

Li, current world record holder in the snatch, clean and jerk and total, called 130kg in her first snatch attempt. Li lifted a new Olympic record of 140kg in her third attempt.

Li continued her dominance going into the clean and jerk section, hoisting an Olympic record of 180kg for a total of 320 kg, also a new Olympic record.

Records shattered, China wins second cycling Olympic gold

Fresh from setting a new world record, China claimed second cycling Olympic gold after winning the women's team sprint at the Tokyo Olympic Games here on Monday.

Chinese pair of Bao Shanju and Zhong Tianshi finished the race in 31.895 seconds, ahead of their German opponents Lea Sophie Friedrich and Emma Hinze, who clocked 31.980 seconds.

"I did not think too much in the final, only to run for the gold," said Zhong, who paired with Gong Jinjie to win the first Cycling gold for China at Rio 2016.

Earlier, finishing in 31.804 seconds against Lithuania, the Chinese pair bested the previous 32.034 seconds mark set by Zhong and fellow Gong Jinjie at the world championships in 2015.

The Russian Olympic Committee team took the bronze by clocking a time of 32.252 seconds to defeat the Netherlands in 32.504.

Team Germany broke the world record of the women's team pursuit in the qualifying race. The German cyclists covered the 4,000m distance in four minutes and 07.307 seconds, shattering the previous world and Olympic record of 4:10.236 set by Britain five years ago at Rio 2016.

The women's team sprint is a track cycling event contested by teams of two women cyclists. The format consists of two rounds: In the first round, teams compete against the clock to set a qualifying time. The top four teams go through to the final round, where the first and second placed teams compete against each other in the gold medal race-off and the third and fourth teams compete against each other in the bronze medal race-off.

This event was added to the Olympics in 2012.

Zhang Changhong broke the world record to win the last shooting gold of the Tokyo Olympics and the fourth for China in men's 50m rifle 3 positions on Monday.

With 466 points, the 21-year-old Olympic debutant set new world and Olympic record to beat Russian shooter Sergey Kamenskiy, who bagged the silver with 464.2 points.

The result is 0.7 points better than the 465.3-point world record set by his fellow countryman Yang Haoran in 2018.

Milenko Sebic of Serbia took the bronze.
