The health authority of Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region on Sunday reported a confirmed bubonic plague case in capital Yinchuan, imported from North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, with the patient in critical condition, leading to a level IV emergency response on plague prevention and control.

According to the statement the Health Commission of Ningxia released on its website, the 55-year-old patient, surnamed Ma, lives in Otog Banner in Ordos, Inner Mongolia. For years, her main work has been grazing.

On August 14, Ma went to a doctor at a local clinic after developing nausea and vomiting symptoms.

One day later, her son drove her to visit a clinic in Pingluo county, Shizuishan, Ningxia.

On Monday, she again visited the clinic in Pingluo county before going to the county's people's hospital.

Ma's son then drove her to the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University in Yinchuan on Tuesday, where she was hospitalized and diagnosed with suspected plague on Friday.

On Saturday, Ma was confirmed as a plague case and was in critical condition.

Related areas and organizations have initiated emergency protocols in accordance with laws and regulations, conducted strict classification and prevention and control measures on related areas and personnel. All measures are being carried out in an orderly manner, the statement reads.

The Ningxia regional government initiated the level IV emergency response on plague prevention and control, demanding all efforts in rescuing the patient and the implementation of comprehensive prevention and control measures, so that the plague will not spread, China Central Television reported on Sunday.
