Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian
China strongly condemns and was shocked by the number of casualties in the terror attacks at Kabul airport in Afghanistan which has killed 103 people including 13 US service members and injured more than 140, said Zhao Lijian, spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry at a regular press conference on Friday.
Zhao said that the terror attacks showed that the security situation in Afghanistan is still severe. The spokesperson hoped that relevant parties could take effective measures to ensure stable political transition and the safety of foreigners and Afghans.
Zhao also mentioned that Chinese Embassy in Afghanistan has verified that there is no report on casualty of Chinese nationals in the accident. The embassy has maintained contact with Chinese nationals who voluntarily choose to stay in Afghanistan, and have offered assistance when needed.
Some terrorist organizations have gathered and developed in Afghanistan over the past 20 years, posing severe threats to international and regional security, especially the East Turkistan Islamic Movement, Zhao said, urging the Afghan Taliban to fulfill its promises to break off from terrorist organizations and crack down on ETIM.
On Friday, the Chinese Embassy in Afghanistan released a notice to remind Chinese nationals to take extra precautions to remain safe and stay indoors if possible, and avoid going to high-risk areas including the airport. It also urged Chinese nationals, including those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan working in the UN or NGOs to contact with the embassy as soon as possible.
