After He Jiaolong, an official in Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, became a global celebrity, the song "The Shepherd of the Cocoa Sea" has become known to all. In recent years, supported by social media live streaming, short videos, and other new media, content based on Xinjiang has become popular across China and beyond. The videos and pictures reveal to netizens the cultural integration in Xinjiang as well as the beautiful and magnificent scenery and delicious food, providing a comprehensive understanding of the changes and development of Xinjiang.

What is the real picture of Xinjiang in its development? What kind of lives do the locals have? To answer these questions, we need to present high-quality short videos made by netizens at home and abroad to show the real Xinjiang, including its economic and social development and the people's life and work from different perspectives.

On August 26, "The Real Xinjiang Through the Eyes of Locals " short video contest cloud conference was held online. The event, hosted by the Xinjiang Federation of Internet Societies , will collect new media works from across the globe, mainly short videos, with the aim of showing the world the real Xinjiang from the locals' perspective, via the voice of the people and comprehensive presentation.

At the "Cloud Conversation" session of the launch event, local Internet celebrities in Xinjiang, overseas vloggers, and tourists to Xinjiang conducted communication about the real development of Xinjiang from a personal perspective. They brought to the public Xinjiang's rapid economic and social development and the growing prosperity and well-being of the people.

Gong Ming, vice president of the Changji Internet Society, Xinjiang, and a post-80s entrepreneur, felt lucky that he has benefited from Xinjiang's economic and social development. He said, "I feel especially lucky to live in Xinjiang, where a broad stage has been set up for entrepreneurs. Over the past 20 years, I have witnessed many touching stories. I must thank our Party for its good policies and feel grateful for the good era. In such a good era with such a big stage, I believe that promising young people will succeed by working hard and striving for their dreams."

He Jiaolong, deputy head of the Culture and Tourism Bureau of Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture, who has personally promoted local tourism development, also joined the Cloud Conversation. She expressed her recognition and support for "The Real Xinjiang Through the Eyes of Locals" short video contest. "I will continue to exert the influence of the TikTok account 'Bureau Chief He Talks about Ili' and use short videos to present the magnificent landscape of Xinjiang to more people."

Situ Jianguo , known as Stu, a Beijing-based British vlogger, shared videos of his field trip to Hotan, Xinjiang. In his videos, the beautiful natural scenery and the lively and generous people show the achievements Xinjiang has made in its development.

Wu Hao from Guangdong has been to Xinjiang many times. "Every time I come to Xinjiang, it's like visiting it for the first time. The vast landscape there always makes me want to explore it again, and every time it impresses me a lot," he said of Xinjiang's allure.

Under the call for "The Real Xinjiang Through the Eyes of Locals" short video contest, the Xinjiang Trade Union launched the "The Real Xinjiang Through the Eyes of Workers" program. Ildos Murat, vice chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, participated in the cloud dialogue and said workers were encouraged to enter the competition, adding that the short videos would inject a breath of fresh air into their lives. Besides, the enabling atmosphere created by short videos about "love home, love work" will help to promote people's deep feelings for Xinjiang.

Thanks to internet technology and new social media, Xinjiang is no longer remote or mysterious to most people. And the cloud dialogue offers another step to reveal the mystery. A picture of prosperous and booming Xinjiang is presented by participants' speeches in the cloud dialogue.

In the process of "cloud interaction," participants were asked to describe Xinjiang in three words and explain why they chose them. We can feel the pride and happiness in the speech given by the young internet celebrity Ayituna. "I think it's charming, unsophisticated, happy. Simplicity can be seen in the eyes of the Xinjiang people. They are welcoming, hospitable and unsophisticated, no matter which ethnic group they are part of. As a native, the happiness index of Xinjiang people is very high," she said.

In commenting on the short video competition, Zhu Qiong, deputy head of the Cyberspace Administration of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, said, "Although we are from different parts of the country, we gathered here because of the internet and 'The Real Xinjiang Through the Eyes of Locals' competition. I want to extend heartfelt gratitude to all of you." She said that the happy lives of the people of all ethnic groups living in peace, unity and progress depict the real Xinjiang. High-quality cultural works also tell the story of Xinjiang in a multi-level, all-round, and three-dimensional way, while showcasing the lovely and respectable image of Xinjiang, she added.

For the launch of "The Real Xinjiang Through the Eyes of Locals" competition, Zhu Qiong issued an invitation to the vast number of netizens inside and outside Xinjiang, at home and abroad: "You are welcome to observe Xinjiang with your eyes, feel Xinjiang with your heart, record Xinjiang with your lens, come together to shoot the beautiful scenery and customs here, tell the story of Xinjiang vividly, and showcase the real Xinjiang to the world."

Although the economic and social development of Xinjiang and people's livelihoods are improving, some prejudices and fallacies about Xinjiang still appear in the West from time to time. "The Real Xinjiang Through the Eyes of Locals" contest will be held to tell more ordinary but real stories about the rapid changes in Xinjiang and to vehemently refute and rectify these prejudices and fallacies in a bid to show the real Xinjiang from multiple perspectives.

"The Real Xinjiang Through the Eyes of Locals" short video contest cloud conference linked a vast number of internet users inside and outside Xinjiang, online and offline, in the "main venue + session" WeChat group meeting forum, attracting a total of 99 WeChat groups and more than 15,000 participants.
