Six people have been confirmed dead in a fire accident that took place at 4:06 pm Friday in a factory in Jiashan, East China's Zhejiang Province, local government announced on Saturday.

After the fire broke out, they immediately set up a special team to carry out firefighting and on-site search and rescue. The factory owner is under investigation.

A local resident surnamed Chen, who was on the site of the accident, was quoted by Hubei-based news media Jimu News saying that at the time of the incident, the fire was heavy, with strong smoke.

Chen said the factory, with over 20 staff members, produces foams and it is flanked by a paint and carton factory. There are three floors in its workshop building. The fire also spread to the factories on both sides.

Chen also said after the fire broke out, people on the first floor of the workshop building escaped smoothly.
