China has completed renovation of the National Stadium, dubbed the "Bird's Nest," where the opening and closing ceremonies for the upcoming Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are to be held, marking the conclusion of all construction work on venues and supporting infrastructure for the Games, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in an update on Monday.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin shared the development at a routine press conference, noting that China is ready to present simple, safe and impressive Olympics to the world.
The organization and preparation activities for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games have received intense attention and wide support from the international community, Wang said.
He said he had noticed that leaders of the Group of 20 (G20) have expressed their high expectations for the upcoming event in Beijing, citing the freshly signed G20 Rome Leaders' Declaration.
"We look ahead to the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, as opportunities for competition for athletes from around the world, which serves as a symbol of humanity's resilience," read the G20 Rome Leaders' Declaration which was adopted at the 16th G20 Leaders' Summit held on Saturday and Sunday in Rome.
China and people from other countries have witnessed a string of historic moments recently, including the successful arrival of the Olympic flame, the start of the 100-day countdown to the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, and the unveiling of medals and costumes for the Games, the spokesperson said.
Test events for the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are also being held in the three major competition zones in Beijing, Yanqing district, and Zhangjiakou in North China's Hebei Province, he said.
The recruitment of volunteers for the events has basically concluded, media reports said on Monday.
More than 1 million people applied to contribute to the 2022 Beijing Olympics as volunteers, and more than 95 percent are between 18 to 35 years old. Nearly 20,000 of them were finally selected by the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and most of them are from colleges and universities in Beijing and Hebei Province.
Training immediately kicked off following the conclusion of recruitment, and it is expected to be finished by the end of December. The training program includes service etiquette and precautions, volunteer psychological and physical health management, emergency care, and study of the epidemic prevention manual
