White pebbles hear a blue stream glide;

Red leaves are strewn on cold hillside.

Along the path no rain is seen;

My gown is moist with drizzling green.

About the poet 

Wang Wei, one of China's most well-known poets of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), was not only a talented poet but also proficient in other art forms such as painting and music.

About the translator 

In 1994, British publishing company Penguin published Xu Yuanchong's 300 Tang Poems in the UK, the US, Canada and Australia. Xu's translating career was influenced by his uncle Xiong Shiyi, who translated the play Wang Baochuan and Xue Pinggui into English.
