Guangzhou, South China's Guangdong Province, reported one new local COVID-19 case on Friday. The case was caused by Delta variant, and is linked to a transmission chain from an imported overseas case at the quarantine hotel where the patient works, Guangzhou authorities announced at a press conference on Saturday.

The carrier, 50, who works at a quarantine hotel in Baiyun district, was uncovered during routine nucleic acid testing among staff working at quarantine facilities for travelers from overseas, according to officials.

Virus gene sequencing showed that the case was caused by the Delta variant, which was found to be linked to an imported case at the same hotel, a spokesperson said.

As of Saturday, Wenxing Chain Hotel Junhe in Baiyun district, where the confirmed infected individual works, was classified as a medium-risk area for COVID-19.

This is not the first time that workers at quarantine hotels in Guangzhou have been infected with COVID-19. Guangzhou previously reported similar cases in September 2021 and December 2020.
