Shi Runzhang

(1618-1683, Qing dynasty )

 The riverside pavilion overlooks the sand;

Green peaks are lost where thousands of snow-crowned hills stand.

I laugh to point at the treetip where hangs cloud white,

Without knowing it is only a sail in flight.

雪中阁望

江城草阁俯渔矶,雪满千山失翠微。

笑指白云来树杪,不知却是片帆飞。

About the poet 

Shi Runzhang was an early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) politician and literati. He was born as an orphan and grew up showing overt talent in poetry. 

About the translator 

Xu Yuanchong (1921-2021) was born in Nanchang in East China's Jiangxi Province. He was a professor of literary translation at Peking University.
