A performance season featuring outstanding dramas from across the country kicked off at the Beijing Comedy Theater on Thursday night with the opening show Dawn 1949.

Hosted by the Bureau of Culture and Tourism of Beijing Municipality and the city's Dongcheng district government, the season has staged 180 performances of 92 dramas since its debut in 2017.

Ten performances selected from 47 nominated dramas will be staged in the city's theaters, including children's play Mermaid from East Sea and Foggy Chongqing.

Telling a story that takes place in Beijing and Tianjin before the two cities were liberated in 1949, the opening show starred renowned actors like Wang Ban, Cao Ying and Shi Zhaoqi. 

Besides this, other 13 shows will be staged in cities like Guangzhou, Nanjing and Changsha during the season.
