First shipment of 1 million China-donated vaccines arrive in Nicaragua after two countries reestablish relations

The first shipment of 1 million doses of vaccines donated by China have arrived at Nicaragua, just days after the two countries announced the reestablishment of diplomatic relations, according to Bolivia-based news outlet Kawsachun News.

A twitter post on Monday showed that 200,000 doses of vaccines, supplied by Chinese medical giant Sinopharm, had arrived in Nicaragua. The donations were transported by an Air China plane, arriving together with a delegation of Nicaraguan government officials.

The donation came days after the Central American country announced to reestablishing of diplomatic relations with the Chinese mainland and the severing of diplomatic ties with the island of Taiwan. 

China on Friday morning also held talks with Nicaragua's government delegation in North China's Tianjin.

Laureano Ortega Murillo, advisor to Nicaragua's president, calling the donation "great news" and "working for the benefit of the Nicaraguan people." He also noted that China has been impressive in terms of growth, social development and working for its people, according to the CGTN.

Li Han, assistant research fellow of the institute of Latin America studies of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences told the Global Times earlier that Nicaragua needed to expand its economic cooperation with other countries in order to tackle its domestic economic challenges linked to rising poverty and unemployment rate, after the US reduced assistance to the State.
