On the Winged Peak a sky-scraping pagoda towers.

Cocks' crows are heard to wake sunrise at early hours.

Fear not the floating clouds may veil the sun from sight!

For you have placed yourself at the top of the height.

About the poet 

Wang Anshi is a widely-known Chinese poet of the Northern Song Dynasty. He was also an important political thinker and revolutionist.

About the translator 

Xu Yuanchong (1921-2021) was born in Nanchang in East China's Jiangxi Province. He was a professor of literary translation at Peking University.
