The Guangdong Higher People's Court ruled on Friday that Chinese entrepreneur Gu Chujun should receive 430,000 yuan ($67,420) in state compensation after some of his previous convictions and sentencing were revoked.

The compensation includes 287,000 yuan for infringement of personal freedom and 143,000 yuan for psychological injury. The court also ordered an 80,000-yuan refund of his previous fine and its interest payment.

Gu, former chairman of Guangdong Kelon Electrical Holdings Co, was arrested in 2005 and sentenced to jail for 10 years in 2008. He obtained a commutation of his sentence and was released in September 2012.

In April 2019, the Supreme People's Court revoked Gu's original convictions such as falsely reporting registered capital for setting up Kelon, falsifying and withholding company information, and decided to shorten Gu's prison terms to five years behind bars for capital embezzlement and other offenses. 

According to the State Compensation Law and relevant judicial interpretations, after the Supreme People's Court partially acquitted Gu's charges, the judicial authorities should compensate Gu for the personal freedom infringement and his mental injury caused by the detention beyond his sentence, said the Guangdong Higher People's Court.
