ON THE RIVERSIDE TOWER
Zhao Gu
Tang Dynasty
Alone I mount the Riverside Tower and sigh
To see the moonbeams blend with waves and waves with the sky.
Last year I came to view the moon with my compeers.
But where are they now that the scene is like last year's?
江楼感旧
[唐]赵嘏
独上江楼思渺然,月光如水水如天。
同来望月人何处?风景依稀似去年。
About the poet
Among the many poets of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Zhao Gu is probably not the most famous one. He was not a
very prolific writer, and only left around 200 poems. However, most of them are unique and classic works.
About the translator
Xu Yuanchong (1921-2021) was born in Nanchang in East China's Jiangxi Province. He was a professor of literary translation at Peking University.
