Injured athlete at Beijing Olympics stable after first emergency rescue by air

A medical team at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics successfully rescued one athlete in Zhangjiakou, marking the first emergency rescue by air conducted during the Beijing Games, the Global Times learnt from the Peking University Third Hospital on Thursday. 

In less than 20 minutes after receiving a report about an injured athlete on Monday morning, the team successfully transferred the athlete to an emergency room in the hospital. 

The injured athlete was unconscious, had difficulty breathing, and was in critical condition on the way to the emergency room, although there was no open trauma.

The 5G technology intelligent treatment platform helped the medical expert team of the Winter Olympics earn valuable time as experts in the hospital acquired a preliminary understanding of the situation of the injured athlete before the helicopter arrived at the hospital. This was done with the help of data transfer through airborne medical equipment. 

After a personalized treatment, the wounded athlete has turned stable.

The feat was done by an expert team from the Peking University Third Hospital, the only designated medical institution for the Beijing Winter Olympics which covers all three competition zones in Beijing, Yanqing district and Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province. The team underwent rounds of training and several drills and tests to ensure the successful medical guarantee for the Olympics.
