The Organizing Committee for Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games said that manufactures are ramping up the supply of the popular Olympic mascot Bing Dwen Dwen in responding to persistently surging market demand.
At a press conference on Sunday, Zhao Weidong, head of the Media & Communications of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympics Winter Games, said that Bing Dwen Dwen will be available in the market until the end of June, asking the public to trust that there will be adequate stock of the mascot .
Moreover, no less than 2,000 BingDwenDwen will be delivered from factories in southern China to Beijing per day, according to Piao Xuedong, an official with the organizing committee on Sunday. The mascot has sold out amid surging demand.
The Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee has launched a total of 16 categories and more than 5,000 types of Winter Olympics licensed merchandise, according to media reports, while Bing Dwen Dwen has been particularly gaining popularity, with people waiting in lines for many hours to get one.
The booming demand for the Bing Dwen Dwen has tightened the supply, with licensed stores setting the limit to one Bing Dwen Dwen per person.
In the face of the huge demand for the mascot, some business owners have attempted to illegally produce and sell counterfeit copies of the Bing Dwen Dwen while others are hoarding and speculating the price from the original 198 yuan ($31) to 10 times higher - all of these actions have been punished by authorities.
Licensed producers in Southeast China also resumed the production of the Bing Dwen Dwen merchandise ahead of schedule to ensure adequate market supply.
