The 23rd batch of the Chinese medical team in Sierra Leone announced Tuesday that they have successfully helped a Sierra Leonean woman deliver opposite-sex twins after an urgent Caesarean section surgery.
Zhou Xi, chief of the team, told Xinhua that the operation Sunday was the first case of Cesarean delivery performed by the team since they began their duties in China-Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital earlier this year.
"It was an urgent call. The pregnant lady was supposed to have the C-section Tuesday this week, but Sunday afternoon, she suddenly had severe contractions and had to call the Chinese doctors for help," said Zhou.
According to Zhou, though the C-section is a common operation in many other countries, it is much harder to be performed here because the hospital has been in shortage of local professionals and blood supply.
"It means the doctors have to try the best to help the patient avoid complications such as metrorrhagia. But thanks to our veteran gynecologist Yu Ling and other doctors, the operation went smoothly," said Zhou.
Zhou said the patient, now a mother of the two, burst into tears when she saw her twins in good conditions after the operation and thanked the Chinese doctors for their timely help.
Since this year, the team has received more than 500 patients and performed close to 30 surgeries, according to Zhou.
