The streamlined, safe and splendid Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 have definitely left their mark in history, Cai Qi, president of the Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games(BOCOG), said at Sunday's conference as the event is about to close.
During a video speech on Sunday morning, Cai, who is also Beijing's Party chief, expressed his gratitude toward those who have supported the grand sporting event. Cai said that under the leadership of the Chinese government, the BOCOG has been staying true to its mission of delivering "green, inclusive, open and clean" Winter Olympic Games. He noted that the BOCOG has also cooperated with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to weather the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, guaranteeing the success of the Winter Olympics.
Cai said that the event has shown participants from all over the world the unique charm of Beijing as the first dual Olympic city; orchestrated all sorts of services that not only provided excellent experience for participants, but also demonstrated Chinese people's well-known hospitality.
The senior BOCOG official also praised Beijing's "efficient and vigorous" COVID-19 measures, saying it could also provide a successful example for the upcoming international events. Cai highlighted Beijing's devotion of hosting "green" Olympics, said the carbon emission of the event were neutralized, and all venues will be reused after the Olympics. For example, Zhangjiakou will serve as a destination of winter sports in the country.
Beijing 2022 vice president and secretary general Han Zirong said at the same Sunday conference that the basic requirement to successfully host the Beijing Winter Olympics lies in efficiently curbing virus transmission. The Beijing Winter Olympics have realized the "best balance" of a safe and splendid sporting event, said Han.
The goal of attracting 300 million people to participate in ice and snow events has become a reality, which draws a new chapter of global winter sports, said Cai.
Cai said the next step is to continue the city's and the BOCOG's preparations for the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games (preferred by the IPC), which start on March 4, to ensure the two Olympics can be equally splendid.
