Afghanistan's state-run universities reopened on Saturday, more than six months after the Taliban's takeover of the country, local media Tolo News TV reported.

"Based on a plan previously announced by the higher education ministry, the public universities reopened today in colder climate areas ... Students are attending Kabul University, with male and female students in separate classes," the TV report said.

Since the Taliban's takeover of the country on Aug. 15, 2021, all state-run universities had remained closed. However, students returned to their classes in public universities in a few warmer provinces of the country's 34 provinces earlier in February.

Earlier officials of the higher education ministry of the Taliban-led caretaker government announced that female students can attend higher education institutions and universities but in gender-separated classes.
