RURAL SCENE AT DUSK

Lei Zhen

(Southern Song Dynasty)

Green grass overgrows the shore of the brimming pool;

The sun pecked by hills sinks into ripples cool.

A cowherd comes back astride on a buffalo;

He blows on his short flute a tune he may not know.

村晚

草满池塘水满陂,山衔落日浸寒漪。

牧童归去横牛背,短笛无腔信口吹。

About the poet 

Lei Zhen was a Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) poet who has created many literature works to depict idyllic lifestyles. 

About the translator 

Xu Yuanchong (1921-2021) was born in Nanchang in East China's Jiangxi Province. He was a professor of literary translation at Peking University.
