Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory has resumed operation on Friday after production was reportedly halted for two days amid requirements on coronavirus prevention in Shanghai.
Tesla is in normal production on Friday, the company confirmed with the Global Times.
Tesla on Thursday said it's cooperating with COVID-19 prevention requirements following news of production halt at its Shanghai Gigafactory.
Tesla is actively cooperating with government requirements on coronavirus prevention, such as nucleic acid tests, while taking every measure to guarantee production, the company told the Global Times following news reports that its Shanghai Gigafactory has been shut down on both Wednesday and Thursday.
The news article, which has appeared on a number of online news portals and websites, said that Tesla’s Shanghai plant will halt production for two days, according to a notice the company sent to its suppliers and employees. The notice didn’t cite the reason for the temporary production halt.
The news article also cited two sources as saying that the notice is applicable to Tesla’s assembly workshop.
Tesla didn’t directly confirm news of the production halt when approached by the Global Times, but the reply hinted that the company is complying with coronavirus prevention requirements, which many people speculated is the reason behind the production halt.
Following a resurgence of locally transmitted coronavirus cases in recent days, Shanghai has carried out large-scale coronavirus screening tests across several districts, requiring many residential neighborhoods to undergo 48-hour isolation for two nucleic acid tests. Authorities also announced on Wednesday that “key areas” in the city would have a second round of nucleic acid tests on Wednesday and Thursday.
As of Wednesday, Shanghai has 495 confirmed domestically transmitted coronavirus cases.
Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory is an important production base for the US electric car maker. The facility delivered 56,515 cars in February, data from China Passenger Car Association CPCA showed.
