The longest and heaviest rainfall ever in 2022 in Central China's Hunan Province has left 10 dead and 3 missing with more than 1.79 million people across the region affected as of Wednesday.
The Hunan government said on Wednesday that rainfall in the province increased by more than 20 percent this year compared with the average level since entering the flood season, especially since May 28 which was over twice as much as the previous years.
With direct economic losses of more than 4 billion yuan (roughly $600 million), the torrential rain has severely damaged the houses of 1,195 families and a large amount of agricultural and industrial infrastructure, including farmland, reservoirs, highways, power supply and irrigation facilities, according to the Hunan government.
Over 800,000 residents from 80 counties in East China's Jiangxi Province have also been affected by the recent torrential rains and rain-induced floods as of Monday, according to local authorities.
China's central weather agency issued a rainstorm warning on Wednesday, with predictions of rainstorms in East China's Jiangxi and Fujian, Southwest China's Sichuan, Chongqing and Yunnan, as well as South China's Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, accompanied by thunderstorms and gale force winds.
