Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an area of study for understanding biological phenomena and diseases based on traditional Chinese culture. Marked by the Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor, TMC dates back to more than 2,000 years ago.

TCM mainly involves knowledge of yin and yang, the five elements, the state of the internal organs, the main and collateral channels, diseases and syndromes as well as etiology and pathogenesis.

Syndrome differentiation and treatment refer to the Four Diagnostic Methods of TCM, including looking, listening, questioning and feeling the pulse.

The therapeutic principles, accumulated over long-time clinical practice, comprise ways to regulate yin or yang, strengthen the body's resistances and eliminate pathogenic factors according to the urgency, location and time of the disease outbreak as well as the patient's physical condition.

TCM believes that yin-yang balance is the foundation for preserving and ensuring the vitality of one's body, while the imbalance between the two leads to the occurrence of diseases.

By adopting the Five-Element Theory, it explains the relationship between man and nature and between different parts of the human body as well as the cause of the disease and its progress. TCM also plays a guiding role in health preservation, diagnosis, treatment, prescription of medicine, acupuncture and other clinical practices. For example, during the hot summer, TCM believes heat should be counteracted by coolness. So people should stay calm to protect their heart as its yang reaches a peak at this time.

Due to the influence of Western medicine, there are fewer and fewer practitioners inheriting this tradition. Therefore, it is imperative to preserve and develop TCM.

In 2006, TCM's Cognitive Approaches to Life and Disease were listed as a national-level intangible cultural heritage.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, TCM has played an important role in effectively preventing and controlling the virus with the efficacy of 91.5 percent thanks to medicines such as "Lung-clearing and Detoxifying Granules," becoming a highlight of the "Chinese solution" in the anti-virus battle.
