The Fenhe River, originating in Shanxi Province, is the second largest tributary of the Yellow River. It passes through the most part of Shanxi from north to south with a total length of 716 kilometers and the basin area nearly 40,000 square kilometers. It makes a long and narrow alluvial plain between two mountains, which includes Taiyuan basin and Linfen basin, known as "the land of abundance". It has fertile soil and is conducive to the development of agriculture. Therefore, The Fenhe River is also known as "the mother river" of Shanxi Province.
Because of the fertile land and the Fenhe River, the Xinghua village, which is located near the Luliang Mountain of Taiyuan basin, has brewed a thousand years of Fenjiu. According to the research of National Geographic of China, abundant folds, faults and fissures in the Cambrian-Ordovician soluble limestone strata in Luliang Mountains open a fast channel for the atmospheric precipitation and infiltration of surface water. In the process of rainwater infiltration, quality of water has also been improved through the natural filter composed of this unique limestone.
