Shanghai's first stray cat management center and stray animal education demonstration base officially opened on Sunday, providing a shelter for stray animals and a platform for the public to learn about their feeding, disease prevention and control and even adoption.
The center, also known as "Cat Island" is an artificial island with an area of about 800 square meters, located in Laogang town of Shanghai. It is home to about 20 stray cats now but will accommodate between 200 and 300 in the future.
The public can visit the island to learn about scientific feeding, as well as disease prevention and control measures for stray cats and dogs, and even apply to adopt stray animals.
In addition to stray cats and dogs, a public welfare adoption program for retired police dogs has also been launched in the center, and anyone who meets the requirements can apply on the official website or at the center.
The public can also participate in interactive activities with guide dogs, to promote an in-depth understanding of their training and services.
Many netizens expressed their support for the rescue of stray animals, saying "This kind of rescue operation not only can teach children the value of life and the importance of nature, but also explore a safe way for the public to adopt stray animals," a netizen said on Chinese social media platform Sina Weibo.
