Rice yield of high quality rice in North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region reached 700 kilograms per mu (666 square meters) at Yuan Longping Workstation in Hinggan League, and achieved the late academician's goal of rice production with high yield and high quality in the cold area.

An assessment team made up of seven experts from institutes including China National Rice Research Institute and the Institute of Crop Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, measured the yields of two experimental rice paddies with high quality rice species cultivated at the workstation on Monday, reported chinanews.com.

The average yields of the two species of rice reached 717.56 kilograms per mu and 702.5 kilograms per mu respectively, about 200 kilograms higher than the common yields of high quality rice of 500 kilograms per mu on the market.

The two new species presented the characteristics of more fruitful ears with larger size, heavier weight, higher quality and higher yield, Wang Xiaobing, director of the Inner Mongolia Rice Certification Committee said.

In the next one to two years, the two species will be promoted in large-scale production after they pass testing production and assessments, Wang added.

Hinggan League is located in the ecosphere of 46 degree north latitude, which is recognized as the world's golden planting belt of rice in cold zone.

Yuan Longping Workstation was set up in Hinggan League in 2018. Yuan , known as China's "Father of Hybrid Rice" who passed away on May 22, 2021, proposed the goal of increasing rice production by 100 kilograms per mu in three years and cultivated rice seeds with unique advantages for the Inner Mongolia grassland.

Wang Shigang, director of the workstation, said on Monday that the workstation will continue to cultivate excellent species  and increase production and improve quality of rice, trying to raise the added value with scientific and technological contributions to the rice industry, and to build a rice provenance production base and key technology export base in northern China.
