The tallest tree in China at the moment, an 83.4-meter Abies Yunnanensis, is still growing healthily in Southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region. The tree broke the record for the tallest tree in China previously reported by a 76.8-meter Bhutanese Pine in Xizang.
The team used laser radar technology to accurately measure the height of the tree, which was determined to be 83.4 meters, about the height of a 28-floor building.
Scientists also estimated its age to be about 380 years through the dendrochronological method. This is also the first comprehensive scientific expedition in China to conduct surveys, photography and collection of germplasm resources on giant trees over 80 meters high.
The researchers also said the tree was in the middle of its life cycle and was still growing healthily, with buds blossoming and fruiting normally. This also means that the tree may continue to grow taller in the future.
"Without special equipment, it is difficult to see the whole tree with the eyes," said team members, who captured the full-length photo of the tree.
