Chinese people's sense of security has reached 98.6 percent, an increase of 11 percentage points since 2012, and China has become one of the safest countries in the world, a vice minister of public security, told a press conference on the sidelines of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Wednesday.

China has one of the lowest rates of homicide and criminal offenses and the lowest number of gun crimes in the world, with 0.5 homicides per 100,000 people, Xu Ganlu, vice minister of public security and a member of the ministry's CPC committee, said as he introduced the achievements in the past 10 years in safeguarding public order and national security.

"The rate of eight kinds of major criminal cases including murder and rape in 2021 was 64.4 percent lower than that of 2012, and drug-related crime has declined by 56.8 percent, and the rate of robbery has declined 96.1 percent."

The Chinese people's sense of safety has obviously increased. According to a survey from the National Bureau of Statistics of China in 2021, the people's sense of safety has reached 98.6 percent, an increase of 11 percentage points from 2012, Xu said.

"At present, China has been recognized as one of the safest countries in the world," Xu noted.

In creating a safe and a stable social environment for the sustained and healthy economic development, the public security organs have taken the initiative to reform the management of public security, household registration, traffic and the entry and exit administration, according to Xu. 

A series of policies have helped facilitate study, work, production and life for people and enterprises; in the past five years, these policies have saved people about 220 billion yuan ($30.55 billion) as well as saving time costs, he noted.

Over the past decade, a total of 3,799 police officers died and more than 50,000 police officers were injured in the line of duty, Xu said.
