A 95-year-old veteran from Linyi, East China's Shandong Province, found a bullet in his neck during a physical examination on Friday. The news sparked a heated debate among netizens.
According to his son-in-law, surnamed Wang, the veteran had originally gone to the hospital for an X-ray after falling on the ground, but unexpectedly found there were bullet marks in his neck. Wang said his father-in-law had fought in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), the War of Liberation (1946-49) and the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-53). "He was injured while carrying a wounded comrade across a river during one of the wars. There are shrapnel in other parts of his body as well." Netizens were moved by the veteran's bravery. "Without their sacrifice and persistence, we would not have a happy life today," one netizen said.
"It is conceivable that the old man suffered much pain at that time, but he did not give up and did not retreat and has been in the front line to protect the country. This is a special 'medal,' worthy of all respect," said another.
