Teachers and students from a university in Central China's Anhui Province presented vivid and dreamy performances with handmade fish lanterns at a sports event, which went viral online and sparked discussion on traditional Chinese culture and intangible cultural heritage among netizens.
In the video, nearly 100 teachers and students from Anhui Normal University are waving over 80 fish lanterns, which were transformed into different shapes with lights and music, as if fish are swimming in the water.
Fish lanterns are one of the props of the traditional Chinese folk dance. There was already a vivid record of this tradition in literary works of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) as early as more than 1800 years ago.
