China's Olympic champion Liu Shiwen is among the 10 newly elected members of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Athletes Commission, which was announced by the world's table tennis governing body on Tuesday.
The elections were held between November 7 and Sunday. The 10 athletes, who were elected by their peers out of 25 candidates, will serve a four-year term.
"The Athletes Commission is crucial as it links the athletes and the ITTF, ensuring the athletes' priorities and viewpoints are communicated and represented," said ITTF President Petra Sorling.
"Their ideas and insights will be invaluable for our mission to develop our sport," commented ITTF Group CEO Steve Dainton.
All members of the Athletes Commission will be invited to the forthcoming ITTF Summit in December in Amman, Jordan.
"I'm honored to become one of the candidates. My declaration is 'Listen to your voice, enjoy table tennis together.' I hope that athletes' voices will be listened to, communication between athletes across different associations and ages will be enhanced, and more women will be encouraged to take part in table tennis," Liu wrote on Chinese social media network Weibo, after announcing that she would run for the ITTF's Athletes Commission earlier in November.
