The future and destiny of mankind must be a top priority and major countries, in particular, should lead by example to inject confidence and strength into the world, Chinese President Xi Jinping told UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a meeting in Bali, Indonesia, on Wednesday afternoon.
China is a staunch supporter of the international system with the UN at its core. To achieve world peace, the purposes and principles of the UN Charter must be observed and the legitimate security concerns of all countries must be taken seriously, Xi said.
The Chinese president pointed out that development should be placed at the center of international agenda to promote stronger, greener and healthier global development.
To achieve that, all countries should make good on that promise and show actual results rather than chanting slogans, Xi emphasized, saying China will promote the overall human progress through Chinese path to modernization, bring new opportunities to the world through new development, and provide more stability and certainty to the world affected by turmoil.
Guterres said that the UN highly appreciates China's commitment to multilateralism. The Global Development Initiative China proposed accords with UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and China's efforts in helping developing countries for common development is unparalleled.
The UN Secretary-General said that the UN steadfastly supports the one-China principle, which is an untouchable red line that must be respected.
