Nine Chinese citizens were hit in an armed attack on Monday night in the town of Gebre Guracha in the northern part of Oromia State, Ethiopia, located about 160 kilometers from the capital Abbie Ababa. One was shot dead, according to an announcement of Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia on Tuesday.
Recently, armed attacks, kidnappings, robberies and other high risk incidents around the borders of Oromia state and other states have become more frequent, leading to a large number of casualties and extreme security risk, the Chinese embassy said in the announcement, pointing out that although the large-scale military conflict in Ethiopia has stopped, local conflicts and clashes in some areas are still acute.
The embassy once again reminded Chinese citizens and organizations in Ethiopia to be vigilant and aware of security precautions and not to travel to or through high-risk areas. If a Chinese national is already in a high-risk area, they should seek to immediately evacuate to a safe area.
Chinese nationals in the nearby areas should remain vigilant, improve their security measures and be ready to evacuate at any time, the embassy said.
