Shanghai to host largest exhibition of Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli's works

"Botticelli and the Renaissance," a show themed on Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli will be held in Shanghai in April. It also marks the largest Botticelli-themed show in the Chinese mainland, the Global Times learned from the organizer.

On loan from the Uffizi Gallery, one of the most-visited museums in the world, the exhibition will be unveiled on April 28 and run through August 27 at the Shanghai Bund One Art Museum.

The exhibition, featuring 48 pieces, includes 10 original works by Botticelli and other Renaissance masters, including two of Botticelli's most famous pieces, "Pallas and the Centaur" and "Adoration of the Magi."

This is the second international exhibition organized by Shanghai Bund One Art Museum and Uffizi Gallery as part of their "five years, ten exhibitions" project aimed at promoting Italian art to Chinese audiences.

The cultural exchange between China and Italy has been fruitful even during the pandemic, Tiziana D'Angelo, Consul General of Italy in Shanghai, told the Global Times during the event.

"This year we will continue promoting art and cultural exchanges between the two countries," she said.

The just concluded 2022 marks the China-Italy Year of Culture and Tourism. A variety of events, exhibitions, concerts and lectures were held in eastern China aimed at showing Chinese audiences Italian art history, archaeological discoveries of civilization on the Italian peninsula, and masterpieces of Italian industrial design, the Global Times learned from the Italian Cultural Institute of Shanghai.

In 2023, the Italian Cultural Institute Shanghai is planning a series of events, including a lecture on Italian design, a brand new archaeological exhibition focused on ancient Roman civilization, Italian Contemporary Art Day, World Italian Language Week, and World Italian Food Week.
