Some 150 people, most of them teenagers, were caught for street racing on Saturday evening in the city of Nanning in South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, according to Nanning traffic police on Sunday.
The police raided a section of the city's Qingxiang Expressway where a group of people gathered for an illegal racing event with many onlookers. Police seized 73 e-bikes, 35 motorcycles and four cars, all suspected of being illegally refitted and being operated without license plates.
Nanning traffic police vowed to strengthen their actions targeting street racing and illegal refitting to create safer public roads, warning parents and guardians not to let minors under the age of 16 ride e-bikes for their own safety。
Street racing is more than a traffic offense behavior in China. In 2011, street racing and drunk driving were listed as dangerous driving crimes in China's Criminal Law and street racers will face large fines and detention between one to six months.
