China and the US should strive to promote the sound and stable development of bilateral economic and trade relations, injecting more stability into the world economy, a spokesperson from China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) said on Thursday.

The comments come in response to US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's remarks that the US wants to work with China on urgent global challenges during a closed-door meeting with American business leaders last week, according to a report from CNN, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The meeting took place in Washington, where Yellen met with the board of the US-China Business Council. The council's board includes the CEOs of multinationals, including FedEx, Pepsi, Walmart and Ford.

CNN said Yellen's remarks signal "increased efforts by US officials to lower the temperature in the complicated and intertwined relationship between the US and China."

"As the world's largest developing country and the largest developed country, China and the US complement each other economically and benefit from each other's development," MOFCOM spokesperson Shu Jueting, told a press conference in Beijing on Thursday.

Shu noted that the China-US economic and trade cooperation is not only related to the immediate interests of the two countries and the two peoples, but also plays a crucial role in promoting global economic growth and enhancing the well-being of people around the world.

Both sides should adhere to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, and strive to promote the sound and stable development of bilateral economic and trade relations, injecting more stability and positive energy into the world economy, Shu said.

Despite Washington's "decoupling" from China push, a good number of leading US executives have visited China recently. Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, arrived in Beijing for a visit to China on Wednesday, joining a stream of foreign executives visiting China in search of new business opportunities.

US government officials are now seeking dialogues with their Chinese counterparts with the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled to visit Beijing from June 18 to 19.

China's exports and imports with the US stood at 1.5 trillion yuan ($216.65 billion) from January to April, down 4.2 percent from the same period last year. The share of the bilateral trade dropped to 11.2 percent of China's total foreign trade volume from the 12 percent seen in 2022, data released by China's General Administration of Customs (GAC) showed.
