Afghan security forces have recovered a huge number of arms and ammunition in a series of operations in the northern province of Balkh on Monday, provincial head of counter-terrorism Atta Mohammad Bilal said Tuesday.

In the operations, "the security forces have found different types of weapons including 37 Kalashnikov rifles, nine pistols, a PK machine gun along with thousands of bullets," Bilal told Xinhua, adding that they arrested three persons over illegal possession of arms and ammunition.

Security forces discovered eight weapon caches, which contain 250 pieces of different kinds of light and heavy weapons in Balkh province over the past year and arrested 25 people over illegal possession of arms and ammunition, the police said.

The Afghan caretaker government has vowed to recover arms and ammunition from anyone living outside the security organs.
