Editor's Note:"Read ten thousand books, and your pen will be guided as if by the gods" is an ancient Chinese idiom that can be seen in students' textbooks. China's Ministry of Education has published an action plan to further promote reading among students across the nation. With new and diverse book recommendations, the reading scene is expected to be revived not only at schools, but also across society. To contribute to this endeavor, the Global Times launched "My Reading Life" essay contest for middle school students.

Life after entering high school was like being pushed by time. Only by constantly moving forward could I complete tasks in the limited time given me. While completing a task, I often thought of a question our teachers asked us since elementary school: What do you want to be? Yeah, what kind of person I want to be. I was curious about the world but at a loss. I didn't understand the meaning of studying all the time. Similarly, I didn't understand the purpose of reading and learning after abandoning my major courses. That is, until my mother recommended a book to me - Chinese publisher Nie Zhenning's book
Shu Sheng Xing, also known as
The Scholars' Journey.
The story of the book takes place in the middle of last century, when young teacher Qin Ziyan returns to the mountains of his hometown for his lover Shu Zhenhao, and engages in secondary education together. The book tells the story of the whirlwind of the special era, the couple and a group of teachers who graduated from first-class universities and how they adhere to the concept of love, and carry out vigorous teaching experiments at Yishan No. 1 middle school.
In the book, I saw selfishness, love, friendship, frustration and optimism. The appearance of Qin Ziyan was like a beam of light in my student days, he allowed me to see the hopes of the young generation, see the future and more possibilities if we stick to our ideas.
Reading can change more than fate; it can give us strength, our own style, and increase our attitude toward life. Qin Ziyan, the protagonist, had a very difficult journey on the road of education. In the process of reading, I often felt the various forms of life in society. It sounds philosophical since I see struggle is the fastest shortcut to success. In the final analysis, the protagonist Qin Ziyan is committed to using reading to promote teaching, and therefore can create a highlight moment in the education development of Yishan No. 1 middle school.
I will always think the book provides a reference model for how contemporary young people should shape their lives.
From the care and protection of the older generation of intellectuals in school represented by President Wei to the young faculty members and young students represented by Qin Ziyan, from the unflinching responsibility of Qin Ziyan and other teachers toward education to the transmission of classical knowledge and useful knowledge, especially for moral culture and self-cultivation from generation to generation, these stories tell us that the education can save an individual, can save a school and can also better the society.
