Editor's Note:

The Hangzhou Asian Games will take place from September 23 to October 8 in East China's Zhejiang Province. It's the third Asian Games held in China, after the 1990 Beijing Asian Games and the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.

The Asian Games presents a historic opportunity for Hangzhou to enhance its urban planning, construction and governance, adding to its international image and influence.

We would like to give you a glimpse of how the Hangzhou Games implements its ethos which centers on being Green, Smart, Economical and Ethical.

The official slogan of the 2022 Asian Games is "Heart to Heart, @Future."

GREEN:

100 %

The 65 venues have achieved 100 percent green power supply. In addition to offshore wind power and photovoltaic power within Zhejiang Province, most electricity is being sourced  from the central and western provinces.

100,000

At the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Aquatic Sports Arena, an intelligent light-guiding system introduced natural light into the hall through 210 light-guiding tubes on the roof, saving 100,000 kWh of electricity every year.

SMART:

12

Hangzhou's first autonomous driving bus was recently introduced as the route covers 12 kilometers near Qiantang Roller Skating Center, the venue for the roller skating and skateboarding events. This round-trip bus line stops at eight stations.

100 million members have registered on a mini-program on WeChat which was launched allowing spectators to access various services and needs for accommodation, transportation and shopping.

83 languages are provided by 55 translation machines scattered throughout the Linpu Gymnasium. Those translators identify languages and translate in real time through AI, to ensure smooth communication among foreign participants.

ECONOMICAL:

44

Among the 56 competition venues for the Hangzhou Games, 44 were renovated from established buildings or temporarily constructed. Only 12 venues were newly built.

16 million yuan

The surface of the oval-shaped track at the cycling arena in Hangzhou's Chun'an County is made of 374 pieces of red pine. Together with the detachable seats, it saved a total of 16 million yuan ($2.2 million).

90,000 tons

The 24-hour water circulation system of the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center swimming pool can maintain clean water without frequent changes, saving about 90,000 tons of water per year.

ETHICAL:

37,600 volunteers have been selected. They are mainly from 46 universities in Zhejiang province; others are translators and medical practitioners recruited from the broader workforce.

6,100 m2

Hangzhou Asian Games Museum covers 6,100 square meters. Three exhibition halls tell the bidding history of the Hangzhou Asian Games, displaying precious items such as torches, mascots and medals from previous Asian Games.

The design of the medal for Asian Games brings together Hangzhou's three world cultural heritage sites, the West Lake, the Grand Canal, and the Liangzhu Ancient City ruins.
