Chinese elements making a craze in Thai’s television drama

The Thai romance television series, Revenge from The Past, also known as Revenge, aired in Thailand in 2022, and recently stirred a lot of buzz in China as it incorporates Chinese elements in the drama.

The story line is about Phing (main actress) who is a kind-hearted chubby young woman whose life has been destroyed. However, this is just the beginning of a story filled with revenge. Her ex-husband married her to take over her business. He even poisoned and buried her alive. However, no one knew that she survived. Phing turned into a charming lady with a heart full of rage and she's ready to do whatever it takes to avenge those who ruined her.

Viewers can clearly see the traces of Chinese culture here, from the red clothes to the Chinese wedding, Chinese medicine, Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and Chinese characters.

The hashtag about Thai drama Revenge embraces Chinese culture throughout and a large number of netizens have been drawn to online discussions on Chinese social media.

"This drama is promoting the Chinese culture!" quipped one Weibo user.

"Chinese culture gradually influences Thai people," one person said on Douyin.

Chinese culture is deeply rooted in Thailand. It is not the first time Thai dramas or films have incorporated Chinese culture.

Chinese Qi pao was used in the Thai television series Qi Pao, Chinese opera in Peony the last petal, Chinese ceramics in Love Never Dies, just to name a few.

There are many Thai people watching Chinese modern dramas, Chinese dramas have become increasingly popular in Thailand in recent years. According to a 2020 survey, over 60 percent of Thai viewers reported watching Chinese dramas regularly, according to media report.

Many Thai viewers find the cultural similarities between China and Thailand to be the most appealing factor, as well as the strong performances of Chinese actors and actresses. Additionally, streaming platforms like iQiyi have made it easier for Thai viewers to access Chinese dramas.

China and Thailand have been close neighbors and friends for generations and their cultural exchange and collaboration between the two countries have long been an important cornerstone of their relations.

This kind of cultural exchange could not only enrich their respective cultural experiences, but also builds a bridge of friendship between the two peoples.
