China Mobile, the largest telecom operator in the world by subscribers, unveiled its "Jiutian" artificial intelligence (AI) large-scale model on Thursday, which has reportedly won support from large enterprises including China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co and China Railway Construction Co.

By adopting the innovation concept of leading large models worldwide, China Mobile team independently developed the structure and configuration of the generative AI large model, achieving self-reliance of core technologies including data building, pre-training and resetting, domestic news site Thepaper reported.

Designed to enhance efficiency, the model has trained over 2 trillion tokens and has professional knowledge in eight industries including telecommunications, energy, steel and transport, which will be conducive to build smart applications rapidly, China Mobile said.

While initially cooperating with select industry leaders, the platform will eventually be open to all industries and enterprises in the future and provide computing power, basic models and training platform, it said.

China's AI sector has developed at an unprecedented speed this year despite an intensifying US blockade, with Chinese high-tech firms including Baidu and iFlytek are rushing to deploy ChatGPT-like AI solutions. By the end of August, a total of 11 Chinese AI large models, including Baidu's ERNIE Bot, have obtained approval for release to the general public.

Recently, China rolled out new policies to promote high-quality development of computing power technology, laying infrastructure foundation of the development of the AI sector.

According to a circular released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the country's total computing power will reach 300 EFLOPS as of 2025, with intelligent computing power accounting for 35 percent of the total, while the eastern and western regions of the country will aim to achieve balanced and coordinated development.
