An annual earthquake drill was held across the United States on Thursday, in an aim to help people better protect themselves during earthquakes.

The annual drill took place at 10:19 a.m. local time across the country Thursday, allowing families, schools, businesses, and organizations to practice how to protect themselves during earthquakes in order to reduce injuries and even loss of life.

During the drill, participants practiced "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" and other recommended safety actions to take during an earthquake.

More than half of Americans are exposed to potentially damaging earthquakes, and the earthquake preparedness drill is a chance for people across the country to practice earthquake safety measures, said the U.S. Geological Survey.
