Lai Ching-te, deputy regional leader of Taiwan island, and some individuals in the island of Taiwan have taken content out of context and hyped media reports which claimed that the mainland "has no plans to attack Taiwan in the coming years." Lai attempted to downplay and deny the harmfulness and danger of "Taiwan independence" activities, and whitewash their image of troublemakers and war instigators disguised as "pragmatic worker for Taiwan independence," Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Chinese President Xi Jinping elaborated on China's principled position on the Taiwan question during his summit meeting with US President Joe Biden in San Francisco last week. He pointed out that the Taiwan question remains the most important and most sensitive issue in China-US relations. The Chinese side requested the US side to abide by the one-China principle, oppose "Taiwan independence," stop arming Taiwan, stop interfering in China's internal affairs, and support China's peaceful reunification.

However, in recent days, Lai has taken the content related to Taiwan question out of context and maliciously hyped it.

Chen said that by hyping the reports, Lai and some individuals in the island are creating excuses for continuing provocations, attempting to confuse public opinion and deceive voters.

The Taiwan question has always been the most important and sensitive issue in China-US relations, Chen emphasized in the statement.

It is hoped that the compatriots in the island of Taiwan can clearly recognize that "Taiwan independence" and peace in the Taiwan Straits are incompatible, firmly oppose "Taiwan independence," and promote the return of cross-Straits relations to the correct track of peaceful development, Chen said.
