At 9 pm on November 28, Zhang Shuaishuai, an employee of State Grid Xuzhou Power Supply Company, received a phone call asking him to deal with the frequent tripping of the air switch due to a broken line grounding at a chrysanthemum planting base located in Jiangsu Yian Flower Co., Ltd. Through his efforts, four electric fan heaters and over 60 supplemental lights in the greenhouses were restored to normal operation, protecting the flowers from harm.
Hu Qing, head of Jiangsu Yian Flower Co., Ltd., clasped Zhang's hands and said, "Due to its long use, the greenhouse is not very well insulated against the cold. Without these heating devices, the chrysanthemums will suffer extensive frost damage in the evening."
Hu is a famous local chrysanthemum grower. Her planting base sells more than 30,000 mums daily, with 90 percent of them being exported overseas. Whenever she encounters any electricity issue, technicians from the power supply company will arrive within 10 minutes to address the problem.

In 2008, Hu returned to her hometown and contracted 60 mu (4 hectares) of land to grow chrysanthemums in over 20 greenhouses. As an inexperienced grower, she failed several times on her first attempts. After conducting research and studying, she found that "only with proper control of such key factors as light, water, fertilizer, and temperature can the flowers thrive. And electrification is the key." So she decided to electrify the existing greenhouses.
In 2010, rural areas gained access to electricity thanks to a 250 kVA transformer and more than 900 meters of low- and medium-voltage lines installed by the State Grid Xuzhou Power Supply Company. This development allowed Hu to equip her greenhouses with essential equipment like electric roller shutters, temperature control systems, and water-fertilizer-integrated irrigation machines to accelerate flower growth and increase yields. That year, the chrysanthemums produced a bumper crop during the Spring Festival period, earning her nearly 200,000 yuan.
Later, she expanded the cultivation area to 600 mu (40 hectares) and built over 50 greenhouses, connecting them with more than 200 steel-framed greenhouses. Inspired by her example, the villagers began growing mums one after another, turning Caoqiao Town into a ten-mile ecological corridor with Gudun Village at its heart, characterized by more than 3,000 mu (200 hectares) of chrysanthemums. Meanwhile, the State Grid Xuzhou Power Supply Company stepped up efforts to upgrade the grid for rural areas. It constructed or upgraded more than 50 kilometers of low- and medium-voltage lines and installed over 80 distribution transformers with increased power capacity of 40,000 kVA.

Over the past two years, with the help of the power supply company, Hu has additionally developed a drying production line and a cold storage warehouse. Based on the "Cooperative+University+Farmers" planting and processing system, over 10 product lines have been developed, such as chrysanthemum tea, medicinal cosmetics, and chrysanthemum essential oil, with an annual output of around 50 million yuan.
