Recently, a man surnamed Chen deliberately put a cockroach in his mouth while dining in Beijing. During the meal, Chen placed the cockroach into his food to extort the restaurant for money.
To avoid damaging the restaurant's reputation and the dining experience of other customers, the business immediately offered to refund the dish and provide a free meal. Initially, Chen refused the restaurant's offer and paid for his meal before leaving. He later called the restaurant and demanded 10 times the compensation, threatening to post the incident online if his demands were not met.
Reluctantly, the restaurant complied and paid the money. After negotiations, the restaurant transferred 1,000 yuan ($141) and also purchased a pack of cigarettes as requested by the man.
However, the restaurant felt that something was amiss and reported the incident to local police. Through investigations, the police discovered several similar cases involving other restaurants. With the evidence in hand, the police swiftly arrested the suspect, Chen, and found the tools used in the crime, including a can of cockroaches stored in a chewing gum container. According to Chen, these cockroaches were purchased in his hometown. After obtaining the cockroaches, he would cook them and select the ones with better appearance to store in the chewing gum container for future use. Chen even targeted high-end restaurants by ordering expensive dishes in order to obtain a "fatter refund and compensation."
