Sheng Guangzu, former general manager of the China State Railway Group Co, was sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined 6 million yuan ($ 836,250) in the first instance court trial for corruption, China Media Group reported on Tuesday.

According to the indictment, from 2004 to 2022, Sheng took advantage of his positions to seek gains for others, and illegally accepted money and valuables worth a total of 56.66 million yuan.

The indictment said that Sheng was found to have used his influence after leaving his official post to seek illegitimate benefits for other enterprises and accepted a massive amount of bribes in return, valued at about 7.14 million yuan.

The Intermediate People's Court of Baoji in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province said Sheng should be punished by law for taking massive bribes. Also, the court, taking into account of Sheng's confessions and his handing over part of the illicit money, agreed to mitigate his punishment in accordance with law.
