A 29-year-old suspect has been arrested by Hawaii police after a Chinese female citizen was attacked in Honolulu and suffered serious injuries, according to updated information released by the Honolulu Police Department on Thursday local time.
"Shortly before 9 pm, HPD officers arrested a 29-year-old male in the Nimitz area for second-degree attempted murder. Charges will be sought with the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney," said the notice released by the local police.
The Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles has dispatched a working group to Honolulu, capital of Hawaii of the US, on Wednesday immediately after a 25-year-old Chinese citizen was severely injured after being splashed with a chemical liquid on a street in Hawaii a day earlier. The local police have initiated a case and are conducting an investigation, according to the consulate general on Friday.
China's Consul General in Los Angeles Guo Shaochun has immediately raised the issue with Hawaii state officials and expressed deep concern over the case, strongly condemning the brutal actions of the perpetrator.
Guo has demanded that the state government should fully coordinate treatment for the injured Chinese citizen, urging the police to conduct the investigation, and bringing the perpetrator to justice, said the consulate general.
The consulate general reminds Chinese citizens to raise risk awareness and strengthen self-protection.
The Honolulu Police Department on Thursday posted a notice seeking the public's help in locating the suspect, who attacked the woman near Ala Moana Center.
At around 9:15 pm on Tuesday, an incident took place. A 25-year-old woman told witnesses that while she was walking near Planet Fitness, an unidentified male threw an unknown liquid at her. This resulted in her skin and clothes being burned, based on the initial investigation, according to the police department.
The victim sought help inside Planet Fitness, where witnesses promptly aided her until paramedics arrived at the scene. Due to the severity of her burns, the victim was sent to the hospital in critical condition, said the notice.
The case has been classified as second-degree attempted murder and the investigation is ongoing, the local police said.
The suspect was observed fleeing the scene on foot, who was described as a man in his 20s, standing a medium build. Initially, the suspect was wearing a black hooded jacket, camouflage pants, and a white face mask. After the incident, the suspect was seen on Kapiolani Boulevard, where another individual handed him a bicycle. The suspect was last spotted without a shirt, carrying a black backpack, and riding the bicycle, according to the notice.
