Tian Wei, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and former president of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, was taken away on approximately March 12 for investigation on suspicion of corruption, marking a "landmark case" in China's anti-corruption campaign in the field of healthcare, according to sources confirmed with the Economic Observer.
Several medical sector sources told Economic Observer that Tian, 65, has a huge influence in the field of orthopedics and is one of the most famous experts in this discipline. Sources also said that the discipline inspection and supervision system had made an assessment as to whether subject Tian to investigation before Chinese New Year, but "finally decided to take action."
Jishuitan Hospital in Beijing specializes in orthopedics, and its orthopedic specialty is always ranked first in China. Tian, who received his bachelor's degree on Clinical Medicine at Beijing Medical College (current Peking University School of Medicine) in 1983, joined Beijing Jishuitan Hospital as an orthopedic resident after graduation, according to Economic Observer.
According to public information, Tian returned to China in 1995 from his studies in Japan and worked at Jishuitan Hospital as vice president of Orthopedic Surgery, and later served as the vice president of Spine Surgery. In 2003, Tian became the president of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital until 2020 when he stepped down from his position.
In 2018, Tian was elected as a foreign member of the French National Academy of Medicine. In 2019, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
