Editor's Note:
"Read ten thousand books, and your pen will be guided as if by the gods" is an ancient Chinese idiom that can be seen in students' textbooks. China's Ministry of Education has published an action plan to further promote reading among students across the nation. With new and diverse book recommendations, the reading scene is expected to be revived not only at schools, but also across society. To contribute to this endeavor, the Global Times launched "My Reading Life" essay contest for middle school students.

Do you like detective stories? Do you want to go through the mysterious fog in London and explore the secrets inside the deep world? If you're interested in the myth and brainstorming, then reading stories about the character of Sherlock Holmes will be one of your best choices.
Sherlock Holmes is an extremely intelligent and observant detective who was created by British author Arthur Conan Doyle.
The character first appeared in Doyle's novel titled
A Study in Scarlet in 1887. In the book, Holmes is put into a detective pair with another character, Dr Watson.
Dr Watson and Holmes have very different personalities. Holmes is intelligent yet stubborn, but Dr Watson otherwise always plays a "problem-solver" role to Holmes. The two are also the most stellar detective duo in literature.
Embracing the two characters, my favorite book is
The Sign of the Four. It begins with Mary Morstan coming to Holmes's home on June 7, 1887. Her father and mother are both soldiers. About 10 years before, her father returned to London on leave and sent her a message to meet him at a hotel. She was told that her father had left the hotel when she arrived.
Her father was nowhere to be found for the next 10 years, but she received a pearl every year. However, this year, she also received an anonymous letter. Holmes thinks it's this anonymous person who must know something and wants to compensate Mary Morstan for something. Then Mary Morstan pulls out a treasure map with four signatures that had been found in the hotel.
And then, they went to a luxury apartment belonging to the anonymous Thaddeus. He said that his father had acquired a box of treasure from India, part of which belonged to Mary Morstan. His father had an argument with Mary's father over the division of property, and Mary's father had a heart attack and died. His father always noticed a person with a wooden leg.
His brother found where the treasure is, and he wants to give Mary Morstan part of the treasure to make up for his father's mistake. When they arrive, they discovered that his brother had been poisoned and the treasure had disappeared. Holmes launched an investigation and analysis that led to a conclusion that it was the work of the man with the wooden prosthesis and his accomplice. They take a dog to catch the criminal. He is then handed over to the police, but they find the treasure had been dumped into the sea.
This book is extremely exciting, and I was even nervous when I read it. I like this book and want to recommend it to you because Sherlock is one of the most brilliant detectives in the world. He can figure out tiny clues and find the suspect. At the same time, Watson's friendship is also encouraging. Friends should always help each other and support each other. They trust each other, and at the same time, they never give up. They dig for the truth by trying to figure out the evidence of the crime. No matter how hard it is, we should concentrate on what interests us and keep going.
What is more, this book taught me a lot about detectives. One day, I can also be a detective. Holmes is an excellent detective. I need to learn from him. I wish I can read more stories about him in the future.
